V answers to nobody and has no face. Grizzly has met him anyway — at six in the morning, in the kitchen, with nobody watching. He does not understand any of it.

The Recruit

  1. Grizzly nose to nose with a small grey plush dog half his size, sizing it up.
    a smaller one arrived. it does not smell like anything.
  2. Grizzly trotting away with the plush hanging from his mouth.
    the human bought it for me. i have decided it is mine to move.
  3. Grizzly sitting upright and square, the plush lying against his front paws.
    so now i guard it. someone has to.
  4. Grizzly curled asleep, chin resting on the plush.
    it sleeps all day and gets carried anyway. we are friends now.
